Academic and School Liaison Lead– Caroline Hide

Business Manager Liaison - Peter Davies

Pete is the school business manager at our sister school, Eastward House, based in Cardiff. Pete has a BSc and considerable experience in SEN/Autism support.  Peter has that rare quality of strength together with a gentle manner and has worked for the school group for a number of years. Our pupils will always be in good hands with Pete around.

Teacher and Specialist Dyslexia Teacher- Judith Livings

A qualified and experienced teacher, Judith has taught in a variety of educational settings including mainstream and specialist, state and independent primary and secondary schools; she has taught literacy and numeracy skills to pupils accessing education authority inclusion services, and provided study skill support to under and post graduate students, up to PHD level. A committed
environmentalist, she has an Honours degree in Education and Environmental science. She has also studied English Literature and has taught English Literature and Language at GCSE and A Level. Judith was a committed ALNCo for fourteen years. She is a Level 7 qualified specialist teacher, specialising mainly in the education of individuals experiencing literacy difficulties, specifically dyslexia. Judith has been an SPLD APC and exam access arrangement assessor. Her current study and research interests include the education of pupils identified as demonstrating traits of ADHD and/or Autism.

Teacher - Ben Macare

Ben has a qualification in Sports Science from the University of Glamorgan and for many years was an Education Officer delivering outdoor residential courses for the National Trust. He also created and oversaw personal development courses for young people and has previously worked as a residential care worker providing pastoral care and teaching life skills to vulnerable young people in full time care.  Ben has many qualifications in coaching various outdoor pursuits on land, water and mountains! 

He has a great love of the outdoors and all things active, together with a very calm, encouraging and unassuming personality that supports young people to gain self confidence. 

Art Teacher -Karl Davies  

Karl is a qualified teacher  with an extensive teaching experience leading a department and has also had a long and successful career as an accomplished artist and children’s book illustrator. Karl has a terrific “think outside the box” approach! 

Teaching Assistant and ELSA-Cissy Harrison

Cissy has worked as a teaching assistant supporting those with learning needs for a number of years both on a 1:1 basis and in small groups. She is committed to continuing professional development, has recently qualified as an ELSA and has taken courses in Autism, Dyslexia, Global Development Delay and various other practitioner's courses to enable her to assist in delivering ALN provision. Cissy is calm, kind and always encouraging. Her gentle manner and mindful approach is always very much appreciated by the children and staff she supports.  

Teaching Assistant -Grace Embra

Grace has been with us as a pupil at our sister school, Castle School, since the age of eleven. After successfully completing her A'levels with top grades, Grace is working with us while she undertakes a teaching degree with a specialism in ALN and a specialist qualification in Dyslexia. Grace is intuitive and a natural teacher with a passion for supporting children with SpLD.

Additional Teaching Staff

At Westward House we offer a range of over twenty GCSE and A'level options including English Language/ Literature, Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Psychology, Business, Sociology, History, Geography, RE, Spanish, Latin, Computer Science and Computer Information Technology. These subjects are taught in a blended learning approach that allows pupils to work at their own pace and with as much overlearning as they require. Pupils have an online subject specialist tutor in each subject and teaching is also supported by many specialist subject teachers who are part of another independent school. We also offer BTEC qualifications in Travel and Tourism, Cookery and Sport Leadership. Welsh, (and other preferred GCSE options), may be available on request, as well as peripatetic teachers of musical instruments. 

 

We also have supportive relationships with outside specialist practitioners that we can call upon for outsourced advice and consultancy to support our pupils who may need additional help in areas of Occupational Therapy and SEND.
