Academic Lead– Michelle Dunne


Michelle is a highly experienced teacher and school leader having worked on school leadership teams in primary and secondary settings and both independent and state sectors. A specialist assessor and Member of the British Psychological Society with a Level 7 qualification, she is passionate about supporting children and young people to succeed. Michelle has a broad CV of experience across all abilities and age ranges, most recently having worked as an ALNCo and on the management team of an independent school for pupils aged 3-16.  Michelle is well known for her empathetic, intuitive, positive can-do approach and for her commitment to raising self-esteem and developing positive mental health in young people.  


Senior Teacher and Science Teacher – Alice Marlow

Alice is a highly experienced qualified secondary Science teacher with a PGCE in Physics and Science teaching. As well as almost 20 years teaching experience, Alice also has an MSc in Environmental Management and industry experience working in environmental management and alternative energy. Alice has taught up to A'level Biology, Physics and

Business Studies as well as having taught GCSEs in the Sciences, Geography, Business Studies and Sport Science. Alice is an encouraging and enthusiastic teacher who brings science to life. 

Teacher - Marian Logie

Marian is a qualified teacher with a wealth of experience teaching in mainstream schools and also many years of experience as a specialist home tutor for children with SEN of various ages. Marian is a primary trained teacher with a Level 4 qualification in Dyslexia and Co-occurring Difficulties as well as a Future Learning Certificate in Understanding Autism. Marian’s experience has always been focused on child-centred approaches. She has a very kind and caring personality and has a wonderful skill at making everyone around her feel calm!

Teacher - Ben Macare

Ben has qualifications in Sports Science from the University of Glamorgan and for many years was an Education Officer delivering outdoor residential courses for the National Trust. He also created and oversaw personal development courses for young people and has previously worked as a residential care worker providing pastoral care and teaching life skills to vulnerable young people in full time care.  Ben has many qualifications in coaching various outdoor pursuits..on land, water and mountains! 

He has a great love of the outdoors and all things active, together with a very calm, encouraging and unassuming personality that supports young people to gain self confidence. 

Teacher - Amy Lewis

Amy is an experienced qualified secondary teacher with a PGCE in Performing Arts, Drama with Music. Amy has previously taught English GCSE and A’level/GCSE Drama. She also taught KS3 Music, Drama and Art in a mainstream secondary school and tutored Maths to Year 11. Highly experienced in working with SEN children and young people who needed an alternative to mainstream provision and also highly experienced in outdoor teaching and pursuits. Amy has led youth provision workshops for senior groups and has additional training in Shakespeare Schools Festival teacher training. Qualified to offer Trinity Guildhall Speech and Drama tuition. Amy is both highly talented and passionate about encouraging young people in the Arts to help promote a positive outlook.


Teacher  Consultant - Michelle Downe

Michelle is a highly experienced secondary qualified Maths teacher with 25 years Maths teaching experience at secondary level and up to A’level.  Additionally, Michelle has 20 years experience as an examiner with Edexcel and was a specialist PGCE tutor with the Open University and also has 10 years experience mentoring NQTs in primary and secondary settings. Michelle is experienced working with pupils with ASD and ADHD and is currently mid-way through a Level 5 Certificate in Dyslexia: Literacy Support and Intervention. Michelle will be overseeing the planning, monitoring and ongoing assessment of all aspects of Maths teaching at Westward House and giving additional support to GCSE students when required. Michelle is pragmatic, highly organised and intuitive in her approach. 

Teaching Assistant -Cissy Harrison

Cissy has worked as a teaching assistant supporting those with learning needs for a number of years both on a 1:1 basis and in small groups. She is committed to continuing professional development and has taken courses in Autism, Dyslexia, Global Development Delay and various other practitioner's courses to enable her to assist in delivering SEN provision. Cissy is calm, kind and always encouraging. Her gentle manner and mindful approach is always very much appreciated by the children and staff she supports.  

Teaching Assistant -Grace Embra

Grace has been with us as a pupil at our sister school, Castle School, since the age of eleven. After successfully completing her A'levels with top grades, Grace is working with us while she undertakes a teaching degree with a specialism in SEN and a specialist qualification in Dyslexia. Grace is intuitive and a natural teacher with a passion for supporting children with SpLD

Additional Teaching Staff


At Westward House we offer a range of over twenty GCSE options including English Language/ Literature, Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Psychology, Business, Sociology, History, Geography, RE, Spanish, Latin, Computer Science and Computer Information Technology. These subjects are taught in a blended learning approach that allows pupils to work at their own pace and with as much overlearning as they require. Pupils have an online subject specialist tutor in each subject and teaching is also supported by many specialist subject teachers who are part of another independent school. We also offer BTEC qualifications in Travel and Tourism, Cookery and Sport Leadership. Welsh, (and other preferred GCSE options), may be available on request, as well as peripatetic teachers of musical instruments. 


We also have supportive relationships with outside specialist practitioners that we can call upon for outsourced advice and consultancy to support our pupils who may need additional help in areas of Occupational Therapy and SEND.
